Santa Barbara to LAX: Car, Shuttle, Train Compared
How to get from Santa Barbara to LAX by private car, airport shuttle, train, rideshare, or driving yourself, with drive times and when to leave for your flight.

Santa Barbara to LAX is about 95 miles on US-101 south and the I-405. With light traffic, the drive takes roughly 1 hour 45 minutes. On weekday afternoons, Friday evenings and holiday weekends, plan on 2.5 to 3 hours or more.
You have five realistic ways to make the trip: a private car service, a scheduled airport shuttle, the train plus the LAX FlyAway, a rideshare, or driving and parking yourself. Each one trades cost against time, comfort and how much can go wrong. This guide compares them honestly, including where a private car is not the best choice.
The short answer
- Fastest door to door: a private car or driving yourself. Both go straight from your address to the terminal.
- Lowest cost for one traveler: the scheduled shuttle or the train.
- Easiest with luggage, children or a group: a private car. The vehicle is sized to your party, and nobody has to transfer bags between vehicles.
- Best for very early flights: a private car or driving yourself, because shuttles and trains run to a timetable that may not match a 6 a.m. departure.
Option 1: Private car service
A private car service picks you up at your home, hotel or office at a time set around your flight, and drives you to your terminal at LAX. On the way back, the chauffeur tracks your arriving flight and can meet you inside the terminal with a name sign.
What it is like: the vehicle is reserved for your party only. There are no other stops, no other passengers and no transfers. You can work, sleep or settle children for the whole drive.
Vehicles: at Seaside Transportation, the choice is a BMW 7 Series sedan for up to 3 passengers, a Chevrolet Suburban for up to 6 with room for luggage, or a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for up to 14.
Cost: this is the most expensive option for a solo traveler. The price is per vehicle rather than per seat, so the cost per person drops as more people share the ride. Families and groups often find the gap smaller than they expected, especially once LAX parking is counted.
Choose it when: you have an early or late flight, lots of luggage, children, a group, or a schedule that cannot absorb a missed connection.
Option 2: Scheduled airport shuttle
The Santa Barbara Airbus runs scheduled shared shuttles between the Santa Barbara area and LAX, with stops in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara and Goleta. It is a well-established local option and is listed by Santa Barbara Airport among its ground transportation services.
What it is like: you travel to the shuttle stop, ride with other passengers and arrive at LAX on the shuttle’s timetable. Departures are spaced through the day, so you may arrive at the airport earlier than you need to.
Cost: lower than a private car for one or two people, because you pay per seat.
Choose it when: you are traveling light, your flight time fits the timetable, and you can get to the pickup stop easily. Check the operator’s current schedule and fares before you book, since both change.
Option 3: Train and the LAX FlyAway bus
Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner runs from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles Union Station in roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the train. The train does not go to LAX. From Union Station, the LAX FlyAway is a nonstop bus to the airport terminals, which adds roughly 35 to 55 minutes plus the wait for the next bus.
What it is like: the coastal stretch is one of the most scenic train rides in California, and you can move around on board. The trade-off is two vehicles, a connection at Union Station, and handling your own luggage between them.
Cost: usually the lowest-cost option for a solo traveler.
Choose it when: you have time to spare, light luggage and a flexible schedule. It is a poor fit for tight connections, very early flights or heavy bags.
Option 4: Uber or Lyft
Rideshare works for a one-way trip to LAX if a driver accepts the long ride. For the return, LAX limits where rideshare drivers can pick up, so check the airport’s current pickup instructions before you land.
What it is like: the price changes with demand, and long trips can be harder to match, especially early in the morning. You are also not guaranteed a vehicle sized for a family’s luggage unless you request a larger car type.
Choose it when: you are flexible, traveling light and comfortable with some uncertainty about price and timing.
Option 5: Drive and park at LAX
Driving yourself is fast and flexible on the way out. The cost shows up later: airport or off-site parking for the length of your trip, and a long drive home after a flight, often in afternoon traffic.
Choose it when: the trip is short, you are traveling with someone who is happy to drive, and you have accounted for parking costs.

When to leave Santa Barbara for an LAX flight
For a domestic flight, most travelers leave Santa Barbara about 4 to 4.5 hours before departure. For an international flight, leave about 5 to 5.5 hours before. That allows for the drive, a traffic margin, and the check-in time airlines recommend: about 2 hours for domestic and 3 hours for international flights.
If you are coming from farther north, add time. Santa Maria to LAX is about 160 miles and Lompoc to LAX about 150, so plan on leaving earlier. See our Santa Maria to LAX and Lompoc to LAX guides for route-specific timing.
Traffic is the main variable. The worst stretches are usually through Ventura County and on the I-405 approaching the airport on weekday afternoons. A Friday afternoon departure can take an hour longer than the same trip on a Tuesday morning.
Getting from LAX back to Santa Barbara
The return trip is where the options differ most. After a long flight, a shuttle or train means finding a pickup point, waiting for the next departure and moving your bags again.
With a private car, your chauffeur tracks the flight, adjusts to an early or late landing, and meets you inside the terminal or at an agreed pickup point. Add your airline and flight number when you book, and tell us if you are arriving on an international flight, because customs and immigration add time.

About 1 hour 45 minutes with light traffic for the 95 miles. On weekday afternoons, Friday evenings and holiday weekends, expect 2.5 to 3 hours or more.
Is there a direct train from Santa Barbara to LAX?
No. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner goes to Los Angeles Union Station, and from there the LAX FlyAway bus runs nonstop to the airport terminals.
What is the cheapest way to get from Santa Barbara to LAX?
For one person, the train with the FlyAway bus or a scheduled shuttle usually costs the least. For a group of three or more, a private vehicle shared by everyone can narrow the difference, and it removes transfers and parking.

Yes. We run the route in both directions. Your chauffeur tracks the flight and can meet you inside the terminal with a name sign. See LAX to Santa Barbara car service.
Should I fly from Santa Barbara Airport instead?
Sometimes. Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is minutes from most South Coast addresses and has a growing list of nonstop routes, but LAX has far more flights and all international departures. Read our guide to choosing between SBA and LAX to compare total travel time.
